The story of April Fools’ Day – How Did It Start?
The custom of making pranks on April 1 has a really long history. It dates back to ancient times, when spring holidays were celebrated, full of fun and mischief. The French, before they moved New Year ‘s Day to January, celebrated it precisely on April 1. When the date was changed, those who forgot about it became the perfect target for… pranks! They were tossed fake invitations, sent to “ghost parties” and given empty gifts. This is how Prima Aprilis, or the holiday of fooling and laughing, was created.
It appeared in Poland in the 17th century. Poles quickly fell in love with mischief, and every April 1 since then, pranks are made in homes, schools and work.
What is April Fool’s Day all about?
The rule is simple: you make jokes and then shout “April Fools’ Day!“. It’s important that the jokes are light, fun and don’t hurt anyone. You can say that today all stores are giving away socks for free… as long as they are checkered or watermelon! Or that a new fashion has been introduced – we now wear socks on our hands, because it’s a symbol of happiness!
