Before we begin, it’s worth explaining what knitting machines<\/strong> actually are. These are devices that do the work that our great-grandmothers used to do – knitting<\/strong>. Thanks to them, the first mass-produced socks<\/strong> were made, because, as you know, making socks by hand took a lot of time. Someone had to come up with a way to speed up the process. And it worked! <\/p>\n\n

The first attempt to mechanize sock production took place in 1589, when William Lee<\/strong>, an English inventor, decided to create a machine to replace hand knitting. It is said that Lee<\/strong> was in love with a woman who did not want to marry him, probably because he was unable to provide for her adequately. That’s when he decided to create something that would allow him to produce fabric faster and more efficiently. As a result, he invented a knitting machine<\/strong> for making socks<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

First knitting machines – somewhat chaotic beginnings<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

Lee’s machine was quite primitive, but effective. It allowed fabric, including socks, to be produced much faster than knitting by hand. It was a machine that operated on the principle of mechanical needles that interlaced threads and created fabric. Although Lee patented his invention, he unfortunately encountered resistance in England. The government felt that his machine could cause many people to lose their jobs, so it was banned from production. However, Lee managed to sell the machine in France and the Netherlands, where it began to gain popularity. <\/p>\n\n

Interesting fact<\/strong>: It was this machine that, despite initial difficulties, became the basis for subsequent inventions that revolutionized the knitting industry. Over time, more advanced models were developed. <\/p>\n\n
